Tiger Woods allegedly turned down a $700-$800 million offer to participate in the LIV Golf series, which is supported by Saudi Arabia, according to Greg Norman, the CEO of the tour.
Woods had been offered a significant sum of money to participate, but had declined, Norman had previously disclosed to the Washington Post in June. Norman described the Woods concept as “mind-blowingly enormous; we’re talking about high nine figures.”
In exchange for substantial cash benefits, some well-known players have quit the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour to play on the controversial tour.
Major champions including Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen, Graeme McDowell, Charl Schwartzel, and Martin Kaymer have all joined the breakaway effort after being promised substantial sums of money to do so.
The Public Investment Fund (PIF), a sovereign wealth fund run by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, has promised to support the LIV Golf Series and donate $250 million in total prize money.
Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, two other golfers, have criticised the fact that players have abandoned the conventional framework of the sport and accepted sponsorship money from a nation with a poor track record for human rights.
In July at the Open in St. Andrews, Scotland, Woods stated his disagreement with the players who had quit.
It’s possible that some of these athletes will never get the chance to compete in significant competitions. That might occur. About that, we are not yet certain. It is up to all of the major championship organisations to make that choice. Some golfers, though, would never, ever get the chance to play in a major tournament or even merely stroll the fairways of Augusta National.
But if these athletes are practising for guaranteed pay, where is the incentive to do so? What motivates a person to go outside and work in the mud? Simply simple, you play 54 holes, compete in a few events, and receive a sizeable advance payout. They provide a range of settings and play loud music.
This is especially true, according to Woods, if the LIV organisation does not earn world ranking points and the major tournaments alter their entry requirements.
It would be terrible if some of these young kids never had the chance to experience it or what we have, such as touring these hallowed grounds and competing in these competitions.
Woods even criticised Norman for his involvement in the split tour. We’re returning to maybe the most illustrious and well-established aspect of our sport because Greg has behaved in a few ways that I don’t think are optimal for our game.
On Sunday in Bedminster, New Jersey, Henrik Stenson won the third contest of LIV Golf’s inaugural season.
Nearly two weeks after losing his Ryder Cup leadership due to signing up for the series, the 46-year-old Swede shot 11-under par at the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster to collect $4 million.
Along with him, Donald Trump, a former US president who attended the full three-day event and owns the course, received the trophy.
